VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College softball team evened up its Northern Athletics Conference record with a doubleheader sweep of Alverno College, winning 10-2, 10-4 at Ceniti Park in Verona on Saturday afternoon. Colleen Joyce went a combined 5-for-5 with three home runs, six RBI and five runs scored en route to two wins for the Eagles.

The Eagles (13-15, 7-7 NAC) made quick work of the Inferno in game one with runs in each of the five innings it took to complete. In the first inning, Colleen Joyce hit her first homer of the day, driving in Jamie Kurt who reached on a walk to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. They added another in the second when Rachel Elliott led off the inning her first home run of the season and then four more in the third inning thanks to 2-RBI doubles by Kurt and Elliott. For good measure, Kristen Salvatore added her first home run of the season with a 2-run shot in the fourth.

Jenna Ryan (9-8) threw 3.2 innings of 2-hit ball without allowing a single run to the Inferno (4-17, 2-13 NAC) and picked up eighth win of the year. Brittany Andrews came in relief to pitch an effective 1.1 innings to close out the game.

Game two started a lot closer than the Eagles had expected after the easy victory in game one. Edgewood College took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with Kurt's long home run to center field. Then it was Alverno's turn to do some damage in the third. The Inferno's Andrea Spindler singled with runners on first and second to drive in her team's first run of the game. They added one more on a passed ball by Ryan, who came in relief for Elliott after loading the bases.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles were determined to retake the lead. After a Stephanie Schafer double and an RBI single by Kurt, Joyce stepped to the plate. The junior put a charge into a Jessica Goetz fastball and deposited it well over the right field wall give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fourth, the Inferno would tie things up again with a 2-RBI single from Spindler, but that's all that Eagle pitcher Ryan would hold them to for the rest of the game. In the fifth and sixth innings the Eagles would break the game wide open with six runs. The icing on the cake was Joyce's third homer of the day, a 2-run bomb to center field to all but put the game away.

Ryan earned her ninth win of the season to move to 9-8 on the year. The Eagles will enjoy a day off before hosting Rockford College on Monday. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Ceniti Park in Verona.
