Dutch defeat Eagles in high-scoring affair

TUCSON, Ariz. – For the second time in three games, the Eagles got on the scoreboard early, but once again couldn't hold the lead long enough. Central College (Iowa) responded with a 16-run outburst to defeat Edgewood College 16-8 in five innings on Monday at Lincoln Park in Tucson, Ariz.

The Eagles pounded out 11 hits, but committed five errors in the defeat. Leslie Osman, Emily Monson, Kristen Salvatore and Stephanie Schafer led the offensive attack with two hits apiece in three trips to the plate. Monson also drew a walk to finish 2-for-2 on the day.

Jamie Kurt recorded her first triple of the season, a shot to deep left which drove in two runs for the Eagles in the top of the first. Salvatore also drove in a pair of Eagles with a double in the fifth, leading to five runs on six hits in the inning for Edgewood College.

For Central (7-1), Afton Nelson and Kyrie Hale recorded three hits in four at bats while also driving in three runs apiece. Nelson helped provide the dagger for Central in the fourth inning when she drove in two runs on a triple to left in the midst of a 6-run inning to put them ahead 14-3. The Dutch bats came to life on Monday, scoring 25 runs in a pair of wins. The first victory was a 9-1 defeat of Wesleyan University (Conn.) whom the Eagles will face on Wednesday. 

In the nightcap on Monday, Edgewood College defeated Mount Mary College 22-0 to pick up its first win of the season.
The Eagles will play UW-La Crosse and Schreiner University in a twin bill on St. Patrick's Day on Tuesday.
