Eagles sweep Raiders in home opener

VERONA, Wis. (Apr. 9, 2008) – Edgewood College  made their home debut firing on all cylinders, defeating MSOE 13-0 in game one and 18-1 in game two to sweep the series. Jennifer Stephens stole four bases during the series to break the school's career steals record.

In game one, Jenna Ryan struck out eight batters helping the Eagles shutout the Raiders 13-0 in five innings. Edgewood College used a three run first and a five run second to jump out to an early 8-0 lead. Ryan (6-6) pitched five innings, striking out eight and allowing just one hit as she picked up her team-leading sixth win. Jamie Kurt went yard twice in the game, finishing the game three-for-three with five RBIs. MSOE's Danelle Ziegler (0-3) was saddled with the loss, pitching two and one-third innings, yielding nine earned runs.

In game two, the Eagles used a six run second and a six run fourth inning to cruise to the 18-1 win in five innings, sweeping the series. Rachel Elliot (1-2) picked up her first win of the season, pitching all five innings, striking out seven. Jennifer Stephens went three-for-four with three RBIs and two stolen bases while Kristen Salvatore was two-for-two with four RBIs and a home run. MSOE's Ashley Kimball (0-5) pitched three and one-third innings, picking up her fifth loss of the season. The Raiders issued 27 walks in the two-game series.

Stephens now has 60 stolen bases on her career, one more than the previous record holder Amie Nelson who had 59 stolen bases from 1993-95. Stephens also continues her hitting streak which has now reached 14 games. Stephens has recorded a hit in all but one game this season and her batting average is currently third best in the nation among Division III players.

With the wins, Edgewood College returns to .500 at 9-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play while the Raiders drop to 0-13 overall and 0-10 in the Northern Athletics Conference. The Eagles next game is on Friday, April 11 when they travel to Sheboygan for a doubleheader versus Lakeland. The Eagles return home on Saturday for a doubleheader against Dominican. First pitch is slated for noon.
