LOVES PARK, Ill. (Mar. 30, 2008) – After having their first two conference doubleheaders wiped out due to weather the Edgewood College softball team was finally able to open up conference play, defeating Rockford College 7-1 and 8-7 to sweep the series Sunday afternoon. The doubleheader was relocated from its originally scheduled location on the Rockford College campus to the Harlem Community Complex in Loves Park due to poor field conditions.
The Eagles scored seven unanswered runs to take game one of the doubleheader 7-1.
Jenna Ryan pitched her fifth complete game of the season for the Eagles, improving her record to 5-4 in the circle. Offensively
Kristen Salvatore was three-for-four at the plate driving in one run while swiping two bases. Leslie Bell amassed three hits as well, driving in two runs. Whitni Genz (1-4) was saddled with the loss for the Regents pitching all seven innings, yielding nine hits.
In game two the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings thanks in part to a
Jennifer Stephens two-out three-run home run. Edgewood College built an 8-2 lead after four innings and withstood a late barrage by Rockford, including a three-run seventh inning to hold on for the 8-7 win. Stephens (2-0) struck out six batters, pitching a complete game for the Eagles. Haley O'Kraski (1-5) took the loss, pitching all six innings for the Regents. Offensively Stephens was three-for-four at the plate with a home run and three RBIs. Leslie Bell was the only other Eagle with multiple hits in the game, finishing two-for-four. Aria Ruotsi and Christina Koblosh went three-for-four at the plate, both driving in three RBIs for the Regents.
With the sweep, the Eagles improve to 7-5 overall and 2-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference. The losses drop Rockford to 3-11 on the season and 1-3 in conference action. The Eagles return to the diamond on Tuesday for their home opener against Concordia Wisconsin.
