FORT MYERS, Fla. (Mar. 19, 2008)-- Edgewood College used a six-run sixth inning to cruise to a 8-1 win over Lasell College (Mass.) Wednesday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Jennifer Stephens started her first game of the year on the mound, pitching a complete game, striking out six and allowing just two hits.
Edgewood College scored one run in the first and one in the second to take a 2-1 lead. The Eagles offense came alive in the sixth inning, scoring six runs to seal the victory. Jennifer Stephens (1-0) pitched all seven innings for the Eagles picking up the win while collected three hits offensively. Leslie Bell, Colleen Joyce and Kristen Salvatore all had two hits apiece. Alexandra Shakeford pitched seven innings for the Lasers, yielding 11 hits, eight runs and picked up the loss. The game was the first ever meeting between the Lasers and the Eagles.
Edgewood College has now won two straight games improving to 4-4 overall while Lasell falls 1-7 overall, having lost their last six games. The Eagles return to action tomorrow morning for games against Fitchburg State (Mass.) and Keene State (N.H.) to conclude their spring break trip.
