Eagles lose second straight extra innings game

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Mar. 17, 2008) -- For the second time in two days the Edgewood College softball team fell in extra innings, losing 5-4 to New Paltz State (N.Y.) in eight innings at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.  Justine Scutaro hit a two out single to right center field to drive in Lauren Motzkin with the winning run.

The score was tied 3-3 at the end of seven innings. In the eighth the Eagles took a 4-3 lead thanks to a Brittany Rynes RBI single, driving in Monica Humphrey. The Hawks responded in the next half inning with Melyssa Cilmi hitting a one-out single to left to drive in an RBI and tie the game at four apiece.  A two-out single by Dale Cornelius advanced Lauren Motzkin, the winning runner, to third base. On the following at-bat Justine Scutaro drove in the winning run off her single to right center.

Jamie Kurt's one-out home run in the top of the third inning gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. In the fifth, a Monica Humphrey single drove in Jamie Kurt to give the Eagles the 3-1 lead. The Hawks countered with a two-run fifth inning to knot the score.

Shortstop Jennifer Stephens was three-for-five at the plate, driving in one run while first baseman Jamie Kurt was two-for-three with one home run and a stolen base. New Paltz State's Dale Cornelius was a perfect four-for-four at the plate. Rachel Elliot pitched five inning for the Eagles, allowing five hits and three earned runs while Jenna Ryan was credited with the loss, pitching two and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs. Kelly O'Hea of New Paltz State recorded her second win of the year.

The loss drops Edgewood College to 1-2 overall while the Hawks remain unbeaten at 3-0. The Eagles take on Western New England (Mass.) later today.
