Freshmen lead Eagles to fifth at NAC Championships

KOHLER, Wis – Three freshman led the way for the Edgewood College men's golf team as the fall season came to end Tuesday at the Northern Athletics Conference championships at the Whistling Straits Irish Course. The Eagles slipped from fourth after the first day to a fifth place finish with a two-day score of 664.

 

Freshman Glenn Nowell looked poised to challenge for the medalist spot after a Monday round of 76. He sat in fourth place, just four shots behind the leader. However, Nowell found the going rough on day two shooting an 87 and slipping to 15th place with a team-best 163.

 

Fellow freshman Mike Battista put up the Eagles' best Tuesday score, carding an 82 for a two-day total of 165. #Logan Kranz# had matched Battista's first day with an 83, but shot an 87 to finish in 24th place at 170.

 

Aaron Gavin and Andrew Gutzman took different routes to their matching scores of 171. Gutzman was in good shape with an 82 after Monday, but slipped to an 89 on Tuesday. Gavin meanwhile improved his score by three shots on the second day, firing an 84.

 

MSOE claimed their second consecutive conference title, edging out runner-up Benedictine University by five strokes, 617-622. Aurora University placed third and Wisconsin Lutheran slid past the Eagles on the second day to claim fourth.

 

With their fifth place finish Edgewood College wraps up the fall portion of their schedule. They will return to action next spring.
