Box Score MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Women's Tennis team made a big step towards their quest for a fourth-straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season championship with a 5-4 win over Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday. Both teams entered with unblemished records in NACC play and now Edgewood College is one win away from clinching a share of the NACC title and two wins away from another outright crown.
EAGLES 5, FALCONS 4
- Despite the close 5-4 result, the Eagles (7-4, 7-0 NACC) had things wrapped up relatively quickly on Friday. Edgewood College won 2-of-3 in doubles play and finished their three singles wins quickly en route to the NACC victory.
- The No. 1 doubles team of
Cecile Fuchs and
Ally Verbauwhede set the tone with an 8-0 victory. Adding a win in doubles play was the No. 2 duo of
Alyssa Carew and
Ellie Murphy, which resulted in the 68th doubles win in Carew's career. She is now tied with Kelsey Steinhorst (2006-10) for the most doubles wins all time. Carew is also three wins back of the all-time wins record, singles and doubles combined.
- In singles play, Fuchs finished off her 2-0 day with a 6-2, 6-0 victory. Verbauwhede also posted a 2-0 day with a 7-5, 6-2 win in her No. 3 singles bout.
-
Maddy Coopmans added a 6-2, 6-4 victory in her No. 5 singles match to help the Eagles take down the Falcons.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College ran its NACC regular season winning streak to 37 matches, which is the second-longest streak of all time. They also own the longest streak, winning 47-straight matches from 2011-15.
- The win means the Eagles are on their way to a four-peat for the NACC regular season crown, but they still have work to do. A 1-1 weekend would likely result in a shared championship, while a 2-0 weekend for the Eagles would give them another outright title.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles two remaining NACC matches will be at home this weekend, beginning with a battle against MSOE tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Quann Park.
