Eagles blank Inferno and Warriors

MADISON, Wis – Starting off strong in conference play is always important, and Edgewood College women's tennis did just that on Saturday at Quann Park. In the first home double-header of the season Edgewood College bested Alverno College 9-0, and remained victorious in the afternoon match against Wisconsin Lutheran 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Against the Inferno, Kai Heineman and Alicia Picard got their second doubles win 8-4 at No. 1, while Haley Brooks and Jaclyn Swift showed veteran skill while winning at No. 2 doubles 8-1.
-Doubles play for the Eagles remained strong, as the Eagles only gave up one game against the Warriors.
-No.1 doubles partners Sydney Verbauwhede and Alyssa Carew and No. 2 doubles partners Marissa Wilson and Haley Brooks both dominated against the Warriors winning 8-0.
-At No. 3 doubles, Lydia Dean and Hayley Nau were able to bounce back against the Warriors, winning 8-1.
-Sydney Verbauwhede won a nailbiter against the Inferno at No. 1 singles, holding on to the win in both sets, 6-4, 6-4
-Against the Inferno, Wilson took the second singles win for the Eagles after a thrilling comeback, 6-0, 4-6, 10-2
-Both wins at No. 4 singles were won in straight sets, as Brooks defeated the Inferno, and Lydia Dean won against the Warriors
-In her first two matches as an Eagle freshman Abbie Groppe came away with wins against both the Inferno (6-0,6-0), and the Warriors (6-1,6-1)

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
-For a second season in a row, the Eagles have swept both Alverno and Wisconsin Lutheran.
-Seven of the Eagle players are now on at least a two-match singles win streak

UP NEXT
-The Eagles head to the USTA/ITA Regional Championships the weekend of September 21-23 at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn.
