VERONA, Wis. – The evening weather in Verona was beautiful, but the numbers on the Stampfl Field scoreboard were less so. Carroll University put up 13 runs in the first four innings and rolled past the Edgewood College baseball team 21-3 on Wednesday night.
Carroll University's (17-14) first five batters of the game reached base, and the Pioneers struck big blows with a three-run home run by Dylan Calahan in the second inning, and a grand slam from Sam Harmeyer in the fourth inning. Carroll piled on eight more runs in the eighth inning for a 21-0 lead.
Edgewood College got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Patrick Wardlaw reached on an error and scored when Alex Fowler's fly ball was dropped in the Pioneer outfield. Nick Cheaney and Jeff Tucker followed with back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Eagles their only runs of the night.
Cheaney was the only Eagle with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with a double. Alex Fowler walked in the sixth inning to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 26 consecutive games. Austin Kraus and Bryan Niznik each had a single for their first career hits at Edgewood College. Alex Meister started, pitched two innings and took his first loss of the season.
Edgewood College will need to have a strong showing this weekend to stay in the hunt for a NACC Tournament berth. The Eagles will be on the road to face Benedictine University on Saturday, before coming home for two games against Aurora University on Sunday. Sunday will be Breast Cancer Recovery Day at the Stampfl Field, as well as Faculty Appreciation Day.
