LISLE, Ill. – Edgewood College dropped a pair of games to Benedictine University in two very different fashions on Saturday afternoon. The two Eagle teams battled through a tense pitchers' duel in the first game before Benedictine pulled out a 4-2 win. The second game was all Benedictine in a 14-3 victory to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The opening game was scoreless through five innings. Benedictine University (20-11, 9-5 NACC) finally touched Edgewood College starter Adam Eck for two runs before he left the game in the sixth. Benedictine added a third run in the sixth and another in the seventh off relief pitcher Will Mossa for a 4-0 lead.
Edgewood College (7-21, 4-8 NACC) wasn't done, as they put together a two-out, ninth inning rally to scare Benedictine. With Sam McGill on second after pinch running for Garrett Bogucki's double, Callen Gavic drove a single through the right side to bring him home. The next batter, Dane Lamont, drove in Ryan Fields with a single to cut Benedictine's lead to 4-2. However, Marty Maves struck out the final batter of the game for his 10th save of the season.
Bogucki and Peter Perales each had two hits in the game, including Bogucki's double. Jeff Tucker also had a double in the game. Eck suffered the loss, striking out four and allowing five hits.
In the second game, Edgewood College responded to Benedictine's first inning run with a Fields RBI single in the second. But Benedictine posted two runs in the bottom of the second, and exploded for six runs in the third inning. Fields added another RBI in the fifth with a sacrifice fly, and McGill drove in a run in the sixth inning with a base hit, but the Eagles could not get back into the game.
Tucker had a triple, while McGill, Tucker and Fields all had singles. Starting pitcher Mason Maziarka suffered the loss lasting two innings and giving up five runs. Jake Sawinski closed the game with three innings pitched, allowing one earned run and striking out three batters.
Edgewood College will return home Sunday for a busy day at Stampfl Field. The Eagles will welcome Aurora University on Breast Cancer Recovery Day and Faculty Appreciation Day. Also, Edgewood College alumnae and 2018 Winter Olympians Nina Roth and Becca Hamilton will be on hand to throw out ceremonial first pitches.
