CHICAGO, Ill. - As one would expect, the level of competition is always elevated in the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Edgewood College women's tennis team ran into a difficult match-up and fell to Augustana College (Ill.) 5-0 in their first round match at the Stagg Field Tennis Complex. Edgewood College finished the season 18-11, with their third straight trip to the national tournament and seventh straight NACC championship.
The Eagles knew they faced a tough challenge in Augustana College (Ill.) (23-8). The Vikings had defeated Edgewood College 9-0 less than a month ago in Rock Island, Ill. The Eagles' Anna Miles and Ashli Paulson suffered an 8-0 loss to Lauren Goggin and Mollie Magee at No. 2 doubles to open the match, and Sarian Fuller and Molly Protz lost 8-2 at No. 3 doubles shortly thereafter. Morgan Wilson and Laura Olsen trailed 4-3 in their No. 1 doubles match before the Vikings' Dana Goggin and Aileen MacDonald won four of the final five games to take an 8-5 victory.
In singles play, Magee gave Augustana a 4-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Olsen at the No. 3 position. The match concluded with Edgewood College's Paulson falling 6-0, 6-0 to MacDonald at No. 4 singles. The closest match of the day was at No. 1 singles where Augustana's Lauran Goggin held a thin 6-5 lead over Wilson in the first set. The match was left unfinished when Augustana clinched the dual victory.
Edgewood College finishes the season with an overall record of 18-11. The Eagles won their seventh straight NACC championship and currently own a 42-match winning streak in NACC regular season play. The Eagles ended their season in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the sixth time in the past seven years.
