GREEN BAY, Wis. – Top quality opponents will prepare a team for top quality competition, and the Edgewood College women's tennis team (15-8) received a double dose of both on Monday. The Eagles fell 9-0 to both St. Norbert College and Carthage College in matches played at the Western Recquat & Tennis Club in Green Bay.
Against St. Norbert College (18-5) the Eagles played well in doubles action, but struggled against the Green Knights in singles play. Anna Miles and Morgan Wilson dropped an 8-5 decision to Elizabeth Manlick and Nancy Chybowski at No. 1 doubles. In singles play, Laura Olsen forced a first set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles, but fell to Chybowski 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
The sledding wasn't any easier against Carthage College (16-1), the 13th ranked team in the Central Region. Sabrina Fuller and Rhea Bradley put up a decent challenge at No. 3 doubles, but fell 8-3 to Carthage's Abbi Howell and Kirsten Peterson. In singles play, Molly Protz nearly salvaged a point for the Eagles. She forced Peterson into a match tiebreaker at 4-6, 6-2, but lost 10-6.
Edgewood College will continue their preparation for postseason play next Sunday with a pair of matches in Rock Island, Ill. The Eagles will meet Wartburg College at noon, before facing host Augustana College (Ill.) in the late match.
