Box Score SAN JUAN, P.R. - Playing in their first bit of non-conference action since late November, the Edgewood College men's basketball team suffered a defeat to Ramapo College (N.J.) Sunday afternoon in the opening round of the San Juan Shootout. The Eagles made a late push in the first half to go up one heading into the locker room but couldn't contain the Roadrunners' duo of Ve'Shawn Polite (28 points) and Frank Nock (25 points) and eventually fell 88-78. Edgewood College guard
Tal Diekvoss scored a career-high 26 points while
Adam Freitag (14) and
Derek Braucht (10) also reached double figures for the Eagles. With the loss the Eagles dropped to 4-7 overall while the Roadrunners now sit at 8-2.
The Roadrunners raced out to a 22-5 lead in the first half but a three-pointer from
Derek Braucht at the 11:52 mark woke the rest of the Eagles up. The Eagles went on a 29-11 run to close the half behind a 5-for-11 effort from deep and led by one at the break. Diekvoss had 17 of his career-high 26 points heading to the locker room on 6-of-10 shooting (3-of-4 from beyond the arc).Â
Ramapo shot lights out in the second half thanks to Polite and Nock's effort. The team shot 52.5 percent (21-of-40) and Polite knocked down 22 of his 26 points in the second half while Nock chipped in 15. There were three ties in the first five minutes of the half, but after Nock hit a jumper at the 15:03 mark to go up by two the Roadrunners began to pull away. Ramapo went on a 10-0 run to go up 55-45 with 13:52 remaining and would lead by double digits all the way until the 4:23 mark, when
Emilio Lopez converted on a layup to make it 73-64 Ramapo. After a Thomas Bonacum bucket to push Ramapo's lead back to 11, Diekvoss hit a three at the 3:22 mark to make it an eight-point game, but that would be the closest the Eagles would get from there on out. The Eagles were 12-of-28 from three-point range (42.9 percent), marking the first time this season that they made at least 10 deep balls. Diekvoss finished 9-of-14 from the floor, including a 6-for-7 showing from three.
Edgewood College will return to action in the San Juan Shootout Monday at 12 pm against Wesley College.
