Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team crossed the midpoint of their regular season, and may be proving they'll have a say in the NACC championship race before all is said and done. The Eagles dispatched Dominican University 80-72 at the Igini Sports Forum on Tuesday behind 19 points from
Joe Klocek and a double-double by
Justin Williams.
The Eagles led for a majority of the first half after Brett Meinecke and Dylan Rusch hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Edgewood College led 17-15 when Tal Diekvoss came off the bench to provide a needed spark. Diekvoss scored a total of eight points on three straight trips down the court, including a pair of three-point baskets for a 25-15 lead. Another three-pointer by Matt Savatski gave Edgewood College (7-6, 5-3 NACC) their largest lead of the first half at 28-17, before the Stars closed to 37-32 at the break.
Dominican University (1-11, 1-7 NACC) wouldn't go away quietly, as Anoribe Nwannewuihe scored on a putback to put the Stars ahead 40-39 less than five minutes into the second half. The Eagles and Stars would battle through six ties and 10 lead changes over the next 10 minutes, until Edgewood College gained control. Tied at 60, Williams scored five straight points and Meinecke drilled a big three-pointer to give the Eagles a 68-62 lead with just over three minutes to play.
A four-point play by the Stars' Logan Harris almost erased that lead, but baskets by Emilio Lopez and Klocek around a pair of Meinecke free throws put the Eagles back ahead by eight points, and forced the Stars into fouling mode. Diekvoss made four straight free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the victory.
Klocek poured in 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting and secured nine rebounds. Williams was a monster on the glass, ripping down 19 rebounds to go with 15 points. His 19 rebounds were a career-high and the most by an Eagle since Charlie Averkamp pulled down the same number in 2006. Diekvoss turned in a season-high scoring performance with 14 points on 4-for-8 shooting and a pair of three-pointers. Meinecke was the fourth Eagle in double figures with 13 points. Rusch led the team is assists with four. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and 45 percent for the game.
Dominican University had five players in double figures, led by Josh Mayberry's 18 points. Like Williams, Harris notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Stars shot 41.2 percent from the field, but were outrebounded by the Eagles 46-36.
