Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team felt the monkey on their back when they arrived at Breese Stevens Field on Sunday. However, with one perfect pass and calm, cool finish from
Evan Rogaczewski the Eagles scored their first goal of the year and eventually notched their first win in a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's University (Minn.)
Edgewood College (1-2) held a slight advantage in the run of play during a scoreless first half. The best chance for the Eagles came in the eighth minute when Andrew Aurit escaped his defender on the right edge of the penalty area. He attempted to beat St. Mary's goalkeeper Joey Petrich from a slim angle but his shot skipped straight across the mouth of the goal and was cleared by the Cardinals.
The Eagles, who had been shutout in their first two games, finally broke through in the 62nd minute. Aurit picked up a loose ball in the midfield and started a rush down the left side. Aurit pushed the ball ahead to Thini Messan who attacked the left edge of the goal box. Messan drew Petrich off his line and slid a perfect pass down the six-yard line. Messan's ball found Rogaczewski who calmly planted it in the back of net to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.
However, things really got interesting as St. Mary's University (2-1-1) pushed forward late looking for the equalizer. In the 89th minute, the Cardinals' Ryan Geidner ripped a low shot which forced a diving save from Edgewood College's goalkeeper Matt Dammen. As Dammen stood up, though, the center referee called a violation on Dammen for releasing and then picking up the ball again.
The result was an indirect free kick for the Cardinals from the left corner of the six-yard goal box with 1:06 remaining. The Eagles packed all 11 players inside the goal box with more than half the team on the goal line. After much jostling for position and one restart from the referee, SMU's Fernando Camacho blasted a shot into the Eagle wall, but it ricocheted harmlessly out of bounds.
Shots in the game were even at eight apiece, with Dammen making two saves to earn his first shutout of the season. The goal was Rogaczewski's first of his career in 19 games played as an Eagle.
Edgewood College will be at home once again on Friday night, when the Eagles host Beloit College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
