MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Edgewood University stepped into the NCAA Division III Tournament chasing history – and walked out writing history. With a brilliant 3-0 shutout victory over Gustavus Adolphus, the Eagles earned the first NCAA Division III Tournament win in program history. Cristian Torres-Gale, Liam Moreira, and Gabe Voung all scored in the Eagles electric victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood University (16-2-2) were patient and collected through the first 15 minutes on Saturday, taking five shots and putting the nerves to rest. Cristian Torres-Gale broke through for the Eagles in the 21st minute. Torres-Gale's eighth goal of the season, assisted by Gabe Voung spurred the Eagles attack.
- Just seven minutes later, Liam Moreira would give the Eagles a confident 2-0 advantage. A corner kick, taken by Connor Gage set up Moreira.
- Edgewood University took a 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting Gustavus Adolphus (14-6-1) 11-7 through the first 45 minutes.
- The Eagles settled in after the break. Eagle goalkeeper, Maverick Van Laanen making two early saves in the first minute of the second half.
- The Eagles defense held Gustavus to just four shots in the second half, not allowing a shot on target after the 46th minute.
- Gabe Voung sealed the deal in the 84th minute, making a run down the left side and sliding the ball past the Gusties goalkeeper and into the back of the net. Voung's goal, assisted by Gavin Lewis.
- Van Laanen posted four saves in his seventh shutout victory of the season.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles victory is their first NCAA Division III Tournament win in program history.
- Edgewood University claims the first NCAA Tournament win for a NACC school since the 2016 season. In 2016, Benedictine was a sectional semifinalist, claiming wins over Carthage (2-1, 2OT), and UW-Whitewater (2-1).
- The last Edgewood University victory in the NCAA Tournament came from the 2011-12 Men's Basketball team. The Eagles defeated UW-River Falls 75-67 in the First Round of the tournament.
- Edgewood University owns 13 shutouts on the season, tying the Eagles season-record for shutouts. The record is owned by the 1999 team, which head coach Tim Bruner was a member of.
