Box Score LISLE, Ill. – The Edgewood College received an early gift from Benedictine University, but couldn't make it stand up in a 2-1 double overtime loss on Saturday night. Benedictine scored twice on headers, the last coming in the 104th minute of the game to hand the Eagles their first loss and snap their six-match unbeaten streak.
Edgewood College (5-3-1, 2-1 NACC) was on the board in the fifth minute on a rare own goal by Benedictine. A Benedictine defender errantly cleared an Edgewood College shot into his own net to put Edgewood College ahead 1-0.
The Eagles held their ground through most of the second half, and nearly went ahead 2-0 when Jake Owen rang a shot off the post in the 81st minute. Just two minutes later, however, Benedictine found the equalizer when Ante Markotic scored off a cross from Julio Lopez. Markotic nearly ended the match in regulation, but his shot with two seconds left struck the post and the match went to sudden death overtime.
In the 94th minute, Edgewood College seemed to receive a bonus when a Benedictine player was sent off with red card, giving the Eagles a 11-on-10 man advantage. However, three minutes later an Edgewood College player was ejected, negating the advantage. With 30 seconds left in the first overtime, Alexander Ribeiro came within inches of winning the game but his shot, like Owen's and Markotic's earlier, hit the post.
Playing 10-on-10, Benedictine finally scored the golden goal. Another cross from Lopez and another header from Markotic ended the night after nearly 104 minutes and snapped the Eagles longest unbeaten streak since 2005. Matt Dammen played every minute in goal for Edgewood College and finished with three saves. Henry Simon led the team with four shots, including two on goal.
Edgewood College will attempt to start a new winning streak on Tuesday afternoon at Lakeland College. The Eagles return home on Saturday, October 5 against Aurora University.
