Box Score MADISON, Wis. – Something about the second half brings out the best in the Edgewood College men's soccer team. For the second straight home game, the Eagles broke free from a halftime draw, this time defeating Beloit College 2-0 on Friday night. The win gave Edgewood College head coach
Tim Alexander his 499th career victory, putting him one win away from becoming the 17th NCAA soccer coach to reach 500 wins.
Edgewood College (2-2) outshot the Buccaneers 7-4 in the first half, but there were few good scoring chances to go around. Likely the Eagles' best first half opportunity came in the 30th minute when Henry Simon drew a foul inside the penalty arc. Alexander Ribeiro beat the five-man wall with the free kick, but Beloit College (0-3-1) goalkeeper BJ Kiser wen high to his right for an excellent save.
The Eagles peppered the Bucs' net, but didn't break through until the 69th minute. Jake Owen started the play be sending the ball wide left to Austin Papenthein. Papenthein's cross found Simon just inside the penalty area, and he laid a perfect one-touch back to Owen. Owen blasted a shot from 20 yards past Kaiser and into the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 Eagles lead.
Soon after, Eagle goalkeeper Matt Dammen made his most important and most difficult save of the night. Beloit's Phillip Amsden broke free and fired from 25 yards out as the defense converged on him. His shot looked perfect, but Dammen fully extended and punched Amsden's shot over the crossbar to preserve the shutout and the lead. Dammen made a total of three saves to notch his second consecutive shutout.
Jacob Overman provided a bonus goal as time wound down. Overman and Andrew Aurit were playing keep-away in the corner as the clock neared zero. After forcing a third straight throw-in, Overman shook his defender and skirted up the end line toward net. His low shot slid past Kiser on the near post with just 13 seconds remaining in the game.
With 499 wins on his resume, Edgewood College head coach Tim Alexander will take both the men's and women's teams to Ripon College on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Red Hawks. The women's game will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the men's game starts at 3:00 p.m.
