WHITEWATER, Wis. – Edgewood College opened the 2013-14 season in style with a nail-biting 5-4 victory over Carroll University. Laura Olsen won the clinching match in the Eagles' season opener. Later in the day, the Eagles suffered through a rain delay and a strong UW-Whitewater team, falling 9-0.

The Eagles' season (1-1) got off to a thrilling start with a morning match in Waukesha against the Pioneers. Edgewood College took a 2-1 lead after doubles play on the strength of an 8-6 win for Anna Miles and Olsen over Carroll's Megan Rosenburg and Abigail Pellett at No. 1 doubles, and an 8-4 victory by Morgan Wilson and Brooke McBain at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, Miles won her No. 2 match and Kristen Boone claimed a victory at the No. 5 position, but Carroll University (0-1) claimed three other matches to even the dual at 4-4. Edgewood College's fate would be in the hands of Olsen at No. 4 singles, playing against Carroll's Alison Lambrecht. After splitting the first two sets, Olsen prevailed in a 10-point match tiebreaker 10-4 to secure victory for the Eagles.

UW-Whitewater (1-0) rolled past the Eagles in all three doubles matches and won each singles match in straight sets. Wilson and McBain posted an 8-4 loss to the Warhawks' Abby Day and Amy Upthagrove at No.2 doubles. Olsen had the closest match in singles, losing to Hillary Franzen 6-3, 6-1.

Edgewood College returns to action tomorrow, playing a pair of dual matches in Wheaton, Ill. The Eagles will face Luther College in their first match before meeting the host school, Wheaton College in the late afternoon.
