Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team was going to toe-to-toe with Aurora University on a soggy Breese Stevens Field, but the game escaped the Eagles in a stretch of 69 seconds in the second half. Aurora University scored twice just a little more than a minute apart and escaped Madison with a 2-0 victory over the Eagles.
The first half proved relatively even as the Spartans held the advantage on shots, but the Edgewood College (6-4-1, 3-2 NACC) generated quality scoring chances of their own. The Eagles' Keoni Roberson and Andrew Aurit each put shots on the frame in the first 10 minutes, but Spartans goalkeeper Zan Richter corralled both of them.
In the 60th minute, Aurora University (7-4-1, 2-2 NACC) broke through. Following a cross the Eagle defense attempted to clear the ball out of their own six-yard box, but Ediz Yorulmazglu was standing in the way. Yorulmazglu knocked down the clear and returned it into the back of the net with a side volley from 15 yards out for a 1-0 Spartan lead.
Just a minute later, the Eagles were called for a foul outside the box. Aurora's free kick was knocked away, but Emmanuel Denton crossed the ball back into danger and Patrick Ries drilled it into the far post netting for a 2-0 advantage. Edgewood College through men forward in the final 10 minutes, and managed three shots, but neither penetrated the Aurora University defense.
Aurora outshot Edgewood College 20-12 on the day. The Eagles were led by Aurit, Kelmend Isaj and Stephen Gilbert who each had two shots in the game. Edgewood College goalkeeper Matt Dammen made four saves.
Edgewood College will be back at home for a non-conference game on Tuesday night, when they host Lawrence University. The match begins at 7:00 p.m. and can be seen live on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
