Aliou Traore, who had played in just five games in his career and never scored a goal, tallied three times in the first 25 minutes of the game to lead the Edgewood College men's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Rockford University at Breese Stevens Field.
Fellow senior Andrew Aurit set up Traore on two of his goals for Edgewood College (10-5-2, 5-3-1 NACC). In the fifth minute, Aurit attacked from the left, drawing Regent goalkeeper Felipe Juarez off his line. Aurit dropped the ball to Traore in the middle for an easy finish. Eight minutes later, Stephen Gilbert's drive into the box found the feet of Traore who calmly punched it in off the fingertips of Juarez.
Traore finished his hat trick in the 24th minute with help from Aurit again. Aurit kept a long ball alive just across the midfield stripe by heading it forward to Traore. Juarez charged out of his box to challenge Traore, but the forward from the Ivory Coast chipped a deft shot over Juarez's head which bounded into the goal for a 3-0 lead, and an unforgettable day for the senior.
Rockford University (0-16, 0-9 NACC) didn't have many chances to score, but Eagle starting goalkeeper Chad Stivers stoned the best one in the 32nd minute. After the Eagles were whistled for a handball in the penalty area, Rockford's Diego Ramos was elected to take the penalty kick. Stivers dove to his left and stoned Ramos's drive to preserve the shutout.
The Eagles would tally three more times in the second half. Evan Rogaczewski took advantage of a Regent turnover and fired a low laser from 20 yards that beat Juarez to his left. In the 69th minute Keoni Roberson was taken down from behind in the box. The Eagles called on senior Evan Conrad who buried the penalty kick into the net for his first goal of the season. Roberson himself finished the scoring in the 75th minute after a cross and an extra touch from Thini Messan and Jacob Overman.
The win solidified the Eagles chances of making the NACC Tournament, but didn't yet clinch the berth. At 16 points, the Eagles are tied for fifth in the standings. One more loss by Wisconsin Lutheran College or a win in the Eagles' regular season finale against Concordia University Wisconsin next Tuesday will clinch a postseason spot.
