Box Score SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – Who knew Edgewood College men's soccer coach
Tim Alexander was hiding a secret weapon on his bench? Once Alexander unloaded sophomore
Keoni Roberson on the Lakeland College defense, the Eagles offense turned potent. Roberson scored the first two goals of his career, including the double overtime game winner, for a 3-2 Eagles victory over the Muskies.
Lakeland College (6-3-1, 2-2 NACC) drew first blood when Paul Elzinga converted a penalty kick in the 17th minute after an Edgewood College foul in the box. The match seemed destined to go into halftime 1-0, until Roberson made his first impact on the match. Following an offside call in the 40th minute, Eagle goalkeeper Matt Dammen sent a free kick to freshman Philipp Konemann who flicked it on to Roberson. Roberson beat Lakeland College goalkeeper Austin Gantzke to the far post for his first career goal.
In the 55th minute, Edgewood College (6-3-1, 3-1 NACC) forged ahead. Evan Conrad's free kick found Nicholas Reynolds, who laid the ball off to freshman Henry Simon. Simon netted his first career goal with a touch shot inside the near post to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. However, in what has become a bit of a worrisome trend, the Eagles surrendered the tying goal late in the second half when the Muskies Mirko Tadic scored from 25 yards out in the 88th minute of the match.
After playing just 23 minutes in regulation, Alexander opted to start Roberson for the overtime session and his hunch paid off in a big way. In the 102nd minute, the Eagles earned a throw-in deep in Muskie territory. Stephen Gilbert launched a long throw to the middle where Roberson came up with the biggest play of his career. Roberson leaped through the defense and re-directed the ball off his head and into the net for a beautiful golden goal.
Shots were nearly dead even for the game with Lakeland College holding a slight 11-10 advantage. Dammen made three saves in goal for his sixth victory of the season, which ties him for the lead among NACC goalkeepers.
Edgewood College currently shares first place in the NACC with MSOE and Dominican University with nine points apiece. The Eagles will be back home on Saturday for a match against Aurora University at 11:00 a.m. at Breese Stevens Field.
