MADISON, Wis.- The Edgewood College men's soccer team earned their first win of the season on Friday night as they were able to outlast Ripon College 1-0. The win was the Eagles' first against the Red Hawks since 2005.

In the first half, the Eagles (1-2) outshot Ripon 9-4 but neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Despite Edgewood College leading that stat column, the game was pretty equal up to this point.

For those who though the second half was going to be just as uneventful as the first, they were mistaken. The Eagles came out strong, firing five shots in the first ten minutes. Edgewood College then took advantage of a throw-in on the Ripon (2-2) side of the field. The Eagles put the ball in play before it was kicked around in front of the goal and somehow ball snuck to the backside where Alexander Ribeiro was waiting and rifled one past Red Hawk goalkeeper Daniel Mikesell to put Edgewood College up 1-0.

The rest of the half proved to be physical and the referees handed out 16 fouls and three yellow cards. Down a goal, Ripon would not give up and fired six shots, but none of them brought the Red Hawks any closer.

Chad Stivers played the whole game in goal, making only two saves, but two very important ones at that. In the 87th minute, Maro Rhein ripped a shot but it was saved by a diving Stivers to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Edgewood College will be in action again tomorrow at Beloit College. The game will start at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles will then return home Wednesday, September 12 to face Lake Forest College. Live stats and live video for this game can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com
