ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team needed either a win or a tie to reach the Northern Athletics Conference tournament. The Eagles offense exploded for seven goals and trounced Rockford College 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
In their highest scoring game coming into today's contest, Edgewood College (8-6-1, 6-4 NAC) had only scored three goals. The Eagles held a 28-0 shot advantage as they netted two scores in the first half and five in the second to down the Regents (2-15-1, 0-9-1 NAC). Andrew Aurit cashed in on an opportunity in the second minute and Edgewood College never looked back. Thini Messan assisted Stephen Gilbert in the 37th minute to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead over the Regents at the break.
Aurit added two more scores to complete his hat trick and give him a team high eight goals on the year. Paul Domann found the back of the net less than one minute after Aurit's third goal to put Edgewood College up 5-0. Westin Smith connected with Jacob Overman who made a great pass to Nick Handrik who netted his first goal of the year. Messan finished the Eagles' scoring after he cashed in on an opportunity in the 78th minute.
Edgewood College stiffened up their defense and did not allow Rockford College get off a single shot all game. Matt Dammen picked up the win for the Eagles in one half in the goal. Kyle Wood made his second appearance all year as he finished out the last 45 minutes in goal. Goalkeeper Mick Goulding snagged 10 saves in the loss for Rockford College.
