MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team generated almost as many shots as Marian University on Wednesday night, but only the Sabres were able to convert chances into goals. Marian jumped over the Eagles in the Northern Athletics Conference standings with a 3-0 victory at Breese Stevens Field.
Edgewood College (4-5-1, 2-3-1 NAC) had some early opportunities, but didn't convert. Most notably,
Andrew Aurit hit the crossbar with a header in the 14 minutes into the game. Instead, it was Marian University (3-8-1, 3-3 NAC) that broke through after the Eagles were called for a handball just outside the penalty area in the 24th minute. The Sabres leading scorer David Reinke struck a perfect free kick over top of the wall and past Edgewood College starting goalkeeper
Kyle Koenig for a 1-0 lead.
Eight minutes later, Sabre midfielder Luke Peltonen scored his first goal of the season. A long pass was turned back by the Eagle defense, but the attempted clear came right to Peltonen who hammered home a shot from 20 yards out for a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Peltonen scored again in the 77th minute in similar fashion. This time corralling a deflected shot and finding open space again for a blast from outside the penalty area. Edgewood College's
Paul Domann and Aurit both put shots on the frame in the final 11 minutes, but Sabre goalkeeper Nathan Thiery saved them both to preserve the shuout.
Koenig made two first half saves, before yielding to
Matt Dammen who stopped three shots in the second half.
Alexander Ribeiro led the Eagles with four shots taken.
Edgewood College will head south of the border on Saturday for another Northern Athletics Conference match. The Eagles will tackle Concordia University Chicago on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
