MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team banged shot after shot without a result at the Benedictine University goal in the second half. Finally, when the opportunity finally presented itself all
Alexander Ribeiro had to do was a hammer the ball into an empty net to give Edgewood College a 1-0 victory over Benedictine on Saturday afternoon.
The first half was even at five shots apiece, although Edgewood College (4-4-3, 2-2-1 NAC) had the better of the chances. Freshman
Sam Quinones sent a ball across the goal box in the 12th minute that eluded Benedictine goalkeeper Manny Martinez. The ball found
Paul Domann alone at the six-yard line but his shot was saved by a Benedictine University (4-4-1, 2-1-1 NAC) defender. The teams went into halftime scoreless.
In the second half, the field tilted severely in Edgewood College's favor. Edgewood College outshot Benedictine 12-3 in the second 45 minutes, but it wasn't until the 83rd minute that they finally broke through. Defender
Evan Conrad came up to take a free kick near the left sideline. He sent a ball into a crowd at the back post that deflected off a defender, off the post and landed softly on the goal line. Ribeiro stepped up and blasted the ball fiercely into the back of the net to break the tie and ultimately win the game.
Robert Huss earned his first victory in goal this season for Edgewood College, making three saves. His counterpart Martinez also made three saves for Benedictine. Domann and
Michael Bollig led Edgewood College with four shots apiece, with each putting two on net.
Edgewood College will stay home for their next match, a Wednesday conference tilt with Marian University. Wednesday's match will kick-off under the lights at 7:00 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field.
