MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's tennis put their undefeated conference record on the line Saturday when they hosted Aurora University and Benedictine University. The Eagles made through the first dual match with Aurora, topping the Spartans 8-1. However, Edgewood College couldn't take that momentum into the afternoon match, falling to Benedictine 5-4.
The Eagles (9-4, 8-1 NAC) got off to a great start against Aurora (5-2, 5-1 NAC), sweeping the Spartans in doubles. Edgewood College won both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles 8-0, with Jessi Ditzler and Amber Hemp winning at No. 2 doubles and Brittany Storhoff and Ali Diamond-Tumbush taking the win at No. 3 doubles. In No. 1 doubles, Hannah Pincsak and Shae Beckwith came back from down 5-4 to beat Maureen Wagner and Elizabeth Pfaff of Aurora 8-5.
Ditzler continued her hot play into singles, defeating Pfaff 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Hemp and Diamond-Tumbush each took their singles matches 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Beckwith topped Natalie Jansen 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and Stohoff won the final match for the Eagles, topping her opponent 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
In the night cap, Hemp and Ditzler topped their opponents from Benedictine (7-3, 7-0- NAC) 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Diamond-Tumbush and Storhoff won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. Benedictine's MaryClare Loughery and Tiffany Wakim became the first pair to defeat an Edgewood College doubles team in seven dual matches, topping Pincsak and Beckwith 8-6.
Hemp and Beckwith both won their singles matches, with Hemp winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Beckwith topping Lisa Carrillo 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
With eight scores in the teams were tied at four, so the dual match came down to which team could win at No. 6 singles, which was the final match to conclude. Benedictine's Lina Savickas defeated Storhoff 7-5 in the first set, but Storhoff came back to take the second set 7-6 (7-2) to force a third and decisive set. In the third set, Storhoff was down 5-2 and held off four match points to get the score to back to 5-4. However it was not enough as Savickas took the final set to win the match 6-4 and give Benedictine the 5-4 dual match win.
The loss ends Edgewood College's 18 conference dual match win streak. The last time the Eagles lost a conference dual match was the first match of last season when the fell to Concordia University Wisconsin 5-4.
The Eagles have an opportunity to start a new streak tomorrow when they travel to Marian University at 10:00 a.m. Edgewood College will then travel to Concordia Wisconsin and try to avenge last seasons's loss. That match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
