MADISON, Wis. – In a game that got delayed 30 minutes, the Edgewood College women's basketball team controlled 35 minutes after falling behind Marian University early in the first half. The Eagles forced 30 Sabre turnovers en route to a 61-49 victory to move to 4-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play.
After
Danielle Dixon got the Eagles on the board with two of her team-high 14 points, Brooke Haen nailed a three-point basket to put the Sabres ahead. Edgewood College answered with an
Alison Tobin jumper, Haen drilled another three-point shot before Alexis Becker converted a three-point play to put the Sabres (5-2, 3-2 NAC) up 9-4 with 15:16 left in the first half. That would be the largest lead Marian would hold all night as the Eagles answered with a run.
Edgewood College (5-2, 4-0 NAC) scored the next five points and 15 of the next 18 points. On the run,
Maggie Peerenboom connected on a three-point basket to put the Eagles ahead for good at 12-10. After a Sabre hoop, Dixon went on a run of her own. She hit back-to-back jump shots before drilling a three-point basket to give the Eagles a 19-12 lead with 8:47 to go in the first half.
The Sabres cut the deficit to one point at 21-20, but the Eagles answered by scoring the next seven points and lead 29-24 at halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles came out and quickly extended their lead to 14 points.
Melanie Walker started the run with jump shot and
Shae Beckwith ended the 11-2 spurt with a jumper at the 15:09 mark.
Marian came back and got within eight points with 6:44 left after an Elizabeth Zutz jumper, but that was as close as the game got the rest of the way. The Eagles earned their largest lead of the game, 18 points with 1:43 remaining and cruised to the 61-49 victory.
Edgewood College scored 26 points off of 30 Marian turnovers in the contest while holding the Sabres to 23.1 percent (6-for-26) from three-point range.
Dixon and Peerenboom each tallied season-highs with 14 and 12 points respectively to lead the Eagles.
Amber Hemp led the Eagles with four steals while Beckwith, Walker and
Sadie Ewing grabbed six rebounds apiece. Haen led Marian with 16 points while Becker recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Zutz also chipped in with 14 points for the Sabres.
