Faurote, Cates lead Eagles past Stars

MADISON, Wis. – After a couple of tough home losses the Edgewood College men's basketball team responded by routing Dominican University 84-54. In front of a packed Edgedome at the annual “Jam the Gym” event, the Eagles found their stroke from the floor and turned in their best shooting performance of the season. The Stars couldn't find an answer for Edgewood College's inside game as the Eagles outscored Dominican 50-14 in the paint.

The Eagles (9-8, 6-3 NAC) jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead just three and a half minutes into the contest. Kent Faurote got Edgewood College on the board and Jeff Barczak scored five of the Eagles' first 11 points. Faurote ended with a game-high 23 points and Barczak put up 14 points.

Halfway through the first frame the Eagles stretched their lead to 18 points following an 11-0 scoring spurt. Faurote scored five points on the run while Tony Cates and Ben Wisniewski chipped in with four points and two points, respectively. Dominican (7-10, 5-4 NAC) then cut the deficit to seven points before the Eagles scored the final four points of the half to take a 37-24 lead at halftime.

The Stars came out of the break and quickly cut the deficit to single digits, 39-30 just two minutes into the half. Edgewood College then responded by going on another 11-0 run to push the lead to 20 points. Derek Nkemnji scored five of his 11 points on the run while Barczak added four more.

With the Eagles up 11 with just under 12 minutes to play, Faurote ignited the crowd when he nailed three consecutive three-point baskets and stretched the Eagle lead to 15. Edgewood College earned their largest lead of the game, 32 points, with 1:27 to play, before settling for a 84-54 victory.

For the game, Edgewood College shot a season-high 57.9 percent from the field while holding Dominican to 34.5 percent from the floor. The Eagles also displayed stellar shooting from three-point range, making 53.8 percent (7-for-13) of their attempts and they held the Stars to a mere 26.9 percent from deep.

Four Eagles reached double figures in points and were led by Faurote's stellar shooting, going 8-for-12 from the floor including 5-for-7 from three-point land. He also dished out a career-high eight assists and grabbed six rebounds. Cates posted a career-high 16 points on 8-for-9 shooting and Wisniewski tallied eight points. Marquis Turley was the only Star to reach double figures with 23 points.

The Eagles will take their one game North Division lead to Marian University on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Brad Richardson will call the live action on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
