MADISON, Wis. - Get ahead early and play good defense has worked well for the Edgewood College men's soccer team this season, and it worked once more on Tuesday night. The Eagles tallied an early goal and then limited Marian University's quality chances in a 1-0 victory at Breese Stevens Field. The win improves Edgewood College to 4-0 in the Northern Athletics Conference.

Edgewood College (6-2-2, 4-0 NAC) scored the first goal in seven of their first nine games and they pulled it off again on the Sabres. Tyler Duellman took a free kick from 40 yards out, just off the right sideline in the 13th minute. Duellman's perfect ball crossed the face of the net and slipped just past teammate Jerrid Dokey who was trying to get his head on the ball. Dokey's attempt may have been just enough to distract Marian goalkeeper Nick Henkemeyer, because Andriy Apetrey slipped in behind Dokey at the back post and headed Duellman's free kick in himself before Henkemeyer could react to it.

The goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, was Apetrey's fifth of the season and fourth game-winning goal. He has 10 game-winning goals in his career, sixth most in Edgewood College history.

The Eagles had a golden chance to make the score 2-0 in the 24th minute. Apetrey slid a through ball to Greg Dezell on a 2-on-2 situation. Dezell's attack forced Henkemeyer into a slide, but his shot caromed off the crossbar and was cleared away.

Marian University (4-6, 1-3 NAC) turned up their offensive attack in the second half. Marian's Milan Stupar put a low shot through traffic on goal in the 53rd minute, but Eagle goalkeeper Shane Sullivan was able to dive to his right to make the save. In the 84th minute the Sabres' Jim Chavez had a free kick from the top of the box, but his shot was rejected by the Eagles' wall. The Sabres outshot the Eagles 15-8, including 10-0 in the second half, but were only able to put three shots on goal. For Sullivan, it was his third shutout in his last four starts and the ninth of his career.

Edgewood College will be off until Sunday afternoon when they travel to De Pere to face St. Norbert College. The Green Knights are ranked fourth in the North region. Game time on Sunday will be at noon.
