MADISON, Wis. - The Eagles extended their Northern Athletics Conference winning streak to six straight matches with a 9-0 rout of MSOE on Saturday. However, their overall winning streak was snapped in the following match at the Quann Park triangular as Beloit College edged the Eagles 5-4.
Against MSOE (3-4, 3-4 NAC), the Eagles overwhelmed the Raiders in doubles action, dropping just one game in three matches. Kesley Steinhorst and Brittany Storhoff were almost as good in singles play, with each winning their match by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Shae Beckwith and Jessi Ditzler also posted matching victories with 6-0, 6-3 triumphs.At No. 5 singles, Bridget Prendergast claimed a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Courtney Grant.
However, the match of the morning was at the No. 2 position. Edgewood College's Amber Hemp battled back after losing the first set to MSOE's Carol Cayo 7-5. Hemp claimed a 6-3 victory in the second set to force a 10-point tiebreaker. Hemp and Cayo needed to go higher than 10 to decide the match, however, as Hemp pulled out a 13-11 victory in the final tiebreaker.
The afternoon match with Beloit College looked to be going in the Eagles' favor early. Steinhorst and Prendergast pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Storhoff and Ditzler topped their opponents at No. 3 doubles 8-4 to give Edgewood College (6-3, 6-1 NAC) a quick 2-1 lead.
The Buccaneers (8-2) would strike back during the single portion of the match. Beckwith won at No. 3 singles, beating Julia Win 6-3, 6-2, and Storhoff would get a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, but the Eagles couldn't score the clinching fifth victory. Ditzler came the closest at No. 4 singles, battling Beloit's Emeline Beck, but falling in 6-4, 5-7, 10-6 heartbreaker.
Edgewood College has three matches remaining in their current five-match homestand. The Eagles will host Concordia University Chicago on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. before welcoming Lakeland College and Marian University on Saturday for a Northern Athletics Conference triangular.
