Britons sharp shooting proves too much for Eagles

ALBION, Mich. – The Edgewood College men's basketball team could not keep pace with Albion College's hot three-point shooting as they fell to the Britons 71-60 in their first game of the Albion College Tipoff Tournament. The Eagles shot just 28 percent from deep while their counterparts connected on a blistering 61 percent of their attempts from long range.

The Eagles (0-2) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a Zach Moore layup just 34 seconds into the game. Albion (2-0) responded by scoring the next eight points, six points on two three-point baskets to take an 8-2 lead three minutes into the contest.

With Edgewood College down two half way into the first frame, the Eagles went on a run of their own. Ben Wisniewski hit a jumper to pull the Eagles within two points at 13-11. Two more jumpers by Wisniewski and a layup by Michael Gehring gave the Eagles a 17-13 lead with seven minutes to play in the first half.

The Britons came back and tied the game at 19 then, went on a run of their own over the final 1:30 of the first half. The Eagles turned the ball over twice in the matter of 10 seconds, both turnovers led directly to Albion points that coupled with a Chris Hutton three ball, and the Eagles trailed the Britons 26-21 at the break.


Coming out of halftime, the Eagles fought back and whittled the Briton lead to just one point at 36-35, with the Eagles scoring highlighted by three-point baskets by Kent Faurote and Derek Nkemnji. At that point, the Briton offense heated up as they responded by going on an 11-1 run over the next three minutes. The run was highlighted by three three-point baskets by the Britons, two by Chris Hutton and the other by Anthony Walsh. Wisniewski ended the run with one of his team leading three three-pointers.

From that point on the closest the Eagles got to the Britons was eight points as Albion's sharp shooting was too much for the Eagles. In the second half, Albion shot 73 percent from three-point range, 8-11. For the game the Britons hit 11 of 18 shots from behind the arc, where the Eagles were just 6-21 from long range.

Wisniewski led the Eagles with 20 points while Nkemnji added 11 of his own and grabbed five rebounds. Tony Cates led the Eagles in rebounds with six while Jeff Barczak handed out a team high four helpers. Hutton led Albion with 19 points, 15 coming from three-point land as he shot 5-7 from deep and 7-10 from the field.

The Eagles will next be in action on Saturday when they finish play at the Albion College Tipoff Tournament against Bluffton University. Tipoff is scheduled to 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Links to both live stats and live audio for tomorrow's game can be found on EdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
