MEQUON, Wis. – When the day began, both Edgewood College and Concordia University Wisconsin had hopes of earning the No. 2 seed in the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament, with a win and some help. When the dust settled, the help won't be necessary as the two teams played to a 0-0 tie in the season finale, making it impossible for either team to earn the second seed.
The Eagles (11-4-3, 8-2-1 NAC) started out firing as they let four shots fly in the first 10 minutes. However, none of the shots were on net, and one was blocked before it had a chance to cause any harm. The next 10 minutes, play moved to the other end of the field with Concordia Wisconsin (11-3-5, 7-1-3 NAC) taking three shots, two saved by Shane Sullivan the Eagle goalkeeper.
The Falcons also earned a corner kick before the Eagles pushed the ball back down field which resulted in Edgewood College's best scoring opportunity of the afternoon. Greg Dezell ripped a shot that beat Falcon keeper Thomas Anderson, but it was not to be as the ball struck the post and deflected wide.
Concordia Wisconsin's best scoring opportunity would come 13 minutes after Dezell hit the post. Enrique Alvardo let a shot fly high that struck the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play where the rebound was collected by James Kroll. After Kroll had possession, he rifled another shot that would sail just high to keep the score knotted at 0-0.
The second half would also be played to a stalemate, sending the game to overtime. In the first extra frame the Falcons had two opportunities to end the match. First in the 96th minute Victor Mendoza took a shot that was turned away by Sullivan, then in the final minute Mendoza sent a header just high of the Eagle goal. Again in the second extra session, Concordia Wisconsin put pressure on the Eagles again as they took two shots, one was saved and the other went high.
Despite tallying an equal amount of shots through regulation, the Falcons recorded four shots in overtime to edge the Eagles 17-13. For Edgewood College, Dezell let four shots fly while Andriy Apetrey and Zach Miller took two apiece. Sullivan tallied eight saves in his fourth shutout of the season while his counterpart from Concordia Wisconsin, Anderson, recorded six saves in his conference leading seventh shutout of the year.
The shutout marks the first time in 17 games this season Edgewood College has been shutout, which is the third longest streak in school history. The Eagles longest such streak came over the 1998 and 1999 seasons when they recorded a goal in 21 consecutive matches.
With the tie, Edgewood College will be the No. 3 seed in the NAC Tournament and will host Lakeland College on Sunday in the first round. Kickoff is slated for noon.
