WATERTOWN, Wis. - Edgewood College snapped back quickly from a loss early in the week and head coach Tim Alexander inched closer to a milestone as the Eagle men's soccer team blanked Maranatha Baptist Bible College 3-0 on a soggy, miserable night at Maranatha Field. The Eagles leaped Concordia University Wisconsin for third place in the Northern Athletics Conference standings.
Playing the entire game through a cold drizzle didn't slow down the Eagles offensive attack. It was senior Andriy Apetrey who drew first blood in the 16th minute. Apetrey scored off an assist by Anthony Colletti for his 10th goal of the season. Apetrey becomes the 11th different player in Edgewood College history to net at least 10 goals in a single season. It was also the 11th game-winning goal of his career pulling him into a tie for third place in the Eagles' record book.
With less than a minute before halftime, the Eagles were awarded a free kick and they knew who to call on. Senior Tyler Duellman blasted a shot past Crusader goalkeeper Ezekiel Leeds for his third goal of the season, establishing a new single season high for his career. Duellman's nine points this season (3 goals, 3 assists) equal the defender's production in his first three seasons combined.
In the second half, the Eagles posted their third goal, giving the Eagles at least three goals in four of their last five games. Sophomore forward Brandon Jerstad notched his first career goal, scoring off a pass from Brad Swenson.
Maranatha Baptist (4-10, 1-8 NAC) actually outshot the Eagles for the game firing 21 shots to the Eagles' 16. However, Eagle goalkeeper Shane Sullivan turned back five shots, and his replacement Kyle Koenig rejected another to keep Crusaders off the scoreboard.
With the win, Alexander earned his 198th career men's soccer victory. He needs two more in the win column to become the fifth coach in NCAA history to win at least 200 men's games and 200 women's games in a career.
The Eagles moved past Concordia Wisconsin on the basis of their win and the Falcons' tie with MSOE. Edgewood College and the Falcons will meet next Tuesday with the third seed in the NAC Tournament on the line. The Eagles have clinched at least the fourth seed and a first round home game on Sunday, November 1 at Breese Stevens Field.
