MADISON, Wis. – A few inches left or right, higher or lower and the Eagles men's soccer team might have pulled out a dramatic win over Ripon College. Instead, it was the Red Hawks who capitalized on their final opportunity to claim a 3-2 overtime victory at Breese Stevens Field.
On a long lead pass from midfield, Ripon College's Demba Camara beat Edgewood College goalkeeper Shane Sullivan to the ball by a few inches about 20 yards out from the net. Demba pushed it to the right towards teammate Ben Baron, who collected the ball and put it in the vacant goal for the victory. The goal ended a comeback for the Red Hawks (2-2) who trailed 2-1 with less than 30 minutes to play.
Edgewood College's Mike Bourgeois had given the Eagles (1-2) the lead in the 65th minute on a perfectly placed free kick from just outside the penalty area. However, the Red Hawks responded just three minutes later when Marco Rhein scored a header off a corner kick delivered by Camara to equalize the match.
The Eagles had two near misses in the waning moments of the second half. First, a Jerrid Dokey header in front of the net found Red Hawk keeper Matt Schultz with 3:22 remaining. Then, just 30 seconds later a 25-yard blast from Andriy Apetery struck the crossbar and bounced out of play.
In the first half, Camara and the Red Hawks struck in the 20th minute. Camara used his chest to corral a Kris Hanson pass and scored from 15 yards out for a 1-0 lead. Edgewood College answered 11 minutes later, when Jim Brandon delivered a free kick to the foot of Tyler Duellman. Duellman struck a low shot through a maze of defenders which found the back of the net.
The Eagles won't have much time to recover as they depart on Sunday for their first road trip of the season. Edgewood College will travel to Appleton to face Lawrence University.
