Faurote's big three buries Benedictine

Kent Faurote fires his game-winning three-pointer

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. – Edgewood College led by no more than a single point against Benedictine University on Saturday night, and it was just enough to steal a win and send the home crowd faithful into a frenzy following Kent Faurote's three-point basket with eight seconds left to give Edgewood College a 67-66 Northern Athletics Conference victory.

Kent Faurote did most of his damage in the second half scoring 12 of his 19 points in the period and led the Eagles back from a seven point deficit in the final 2:08 by hitting two of his three three-pointers down the stretch, including the game-winner with just seconds remaining.

Edgewood College (3-5, 2-1 NAC) trailed by as many as 13 points on two separate occasions, but used its defense to cause two costly Benedictine turnovers in the final minute to set up Faurote's game-winner.

It was the most dramatic win of the season for Edgewood College. The Eagles shot just 37.9 percent in the first half and were just 1-for-11 from three-point range. To make matters worse for the home team in the opening session, Benedictine's Nate Green hit a three-pointer with time expiring to give the visitors a 36-29 lead and took the air out of the Todd Wehr Edgedome heading into intermission.

Whatever Head Coach Todd Adrian said at halftime though, seemed to work for them down the stretch. With 10:13 remaining in the game, Edgewood College had finally cut the Benedictine lead to five. It was the closest they had gotten since before Green's three-pointer to end the first half. Then, in the final 59 seconds, Jon Ciche scored a bucket and Faurote sunk two three-point baskets to give Edgewood College the win.

Ciche added seven rebounds and three blocked shots in the win. Faurote also pulled down seven boards and swatted two Benedictine shots as he went 8-for-13 from the field and 3-of-7 from downtown to lead the Eagles with 19 points. Ben Wisniewski scored 13 points on 5-of-14 from the field and added a team-high four assists.

Edgewood College shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the field in the second half while holding its opponents a mere 34.4 percent (11-for-32).

Benedictine (4-3, 1-2 NAC) played without its leading scorer and first team All-NAC selection from last season, Jared Bailey, who suffered a concussion in his previous game. In the absence of Bailey, Benedictine managed to shoot just 37.1 percent from the field and produced its second lowest scoring output of the season.

Both teams could have prevented the narrow outcome from the free throw line. Edgewood College shot only 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the charity stripe while Benedictine was just 54.5 percent (12-of-22).

Edgewood College will try and use the moment from its big win when they travel to No. 6-ranked UW-Stevens Point next Saturday for a non-conference showdown at 7:00 p.m.
