Eagles' season ends with loss to No. 13 Dominican

Box Score

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – It was a rematch from the 2006 Northern Athletics Conference semifinal match and the result was no different. No. 13 Dominican University used four early scores to beat Edgewood College 5-0 at West Campus Field on Tuesday afternoon and will play for the NAC tournament championship on Saturday.

Edgewood College (10-9-1) struggled from the get-go after failing to get a shot off until Dominican had already scored twice. The Stars scored four times in the first 33:11 en route to the 5-0 whitewash.

Lionel Tovar, Edwin Lagunas, Michael Kapusta and Matt Kochanowski all scored within the first 34 minutes of play and all four have scored at least 25 points on the season, led by Kochanowski's 43 points (17 goals, 9 assists). Edwin Rodriguez was the fifth and final goal scorer for the Stars as they outshot the Eagles 19-2.

Edgewood College had entered play on Tuesday on a four game shutout streak, not having allowed a goal since a 2-0 loss to UW-Whitewater on October 17, a span of more than 435 minutes. It was difficult to expect a continuation of that streak against the thirteenth ranked team in the nation that has outscored its opponents 89-12 on the season.

Still, it was a valiant season for the Eagles who battled through an up-and-down year to say the least. They began the year 4-6 overall and struggled mightily at home, but somehow turned it around to finish 6-3-1 in their final 10 games. Edgewood College went unbeaten in its final five regular season conference games to go 4-0-1 during that span. Each of those matches went towards earning the No. 5 seed in the Northern Athletics Conference tournament and they won their first round contest on the road beating MSOE 2-0.

Andriy Apetrey scored both goals in their win against the Raiders and finished as the team's leading scorer with 19 points (7 goals, 5 assists). Jerrid Dokey and Tyler Duellman anchored the offense and defense, respectively, for the majority of the season and each earned ESPN Academic All-District honors for their accolades on and off the field.

Aside from Tuesday's loss, the Eagle netminder, Shane Sullivan, turned in six shutouts on the year including the team's previous four games leading up to the semifinal loss.

The Eagles end the year with a fifth straight winning season and a third straight winning road record.
