MADISON, Wis. – In a game they needed to have the Edgewood College men's soccer team got it done in a 1-0 defeat of second-place Concordia University Wisconsin at Breese Stevens Field on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (8-8, 6-3 NAC) went into their game against the Falcons (10-6, 8-2 NAC) in sixth place and came out tied for fourth after Aurora – whom they meet on Saturday – dropped its match Wednesday at Benedictine. Seven teams are vying for the top six postseason spots magnifying the importance of each game down the stretch.
With just two games remaining Andriy Apetrey helped the Eagles get one step closer with a 43rd minute goal thanks to a through ball from Matt Pampuch. The Lozani, Ukraine native received the pass and it was off to the races before putting it past CUW keeper, Thomas Anderson.
It was Apetrey's fifth goal of the season and it gave the Eagles the advantage they were looking for heading into halftime. Much of the game was played in the middle of the field with both teams battling for possession.
In the 64th minute the Eagles had a chance to provide an insurance goal as Andrew Witek was able to scamper his way from Falcon defenders on the end line. He then snuck a pass underneath the diving keeper and dished it off to a cutting Greg Dezell with an empty net opportunity to tack one on, but the shot went high and deflected off the crossbar to spoil the easy scoring chance.
Three minutes later a Falcon defender slipped while looking to make a pass and Jake Andreska took the ball and broke towards the goal. His shot was saved but caromed right the Eagles' leading scorer, Jerrid Dokey, but his shot went high as well.
It was Shane Sullivan and the Eagle defense that deserves a lot of the credit in this one as they held an opponent scoreless for the fifth time this season. Edgewood College outshot the Falcons 9-8 and trapped the ball in the opponent's zone enough to earn nine corner kicks while surrendering just six.
The Eagles will host Aurora University at Breese Stevens Field at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and it will most certainly hold NAC tournament implications.
