Eagles fall to No. 3 Titans, Firebirds

KENOSHA, WIS. – Women's Volleyball continued their nonconference road trip Tuesday with a tri-match. They took on a pair of strong foes in the UW-Oshkosh Titans, ranked third in the latest Division III national poll, and the Carthage Firebirds, receiving votes. The Eagles (9-6) battled valiantly in a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-18) loss to the Titans (16-2) and a 3-1 (25-17, 25-14, 24-26, 25-21) defeat against the Firebirds (11-5)
 
MATCH ONE: #3 UW-OSHKOSH 3, EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-18)
- The two squads were an even match through the opening serves of the first frame. The Eagles jumped ahead 14-10 with four unanswered, but a 10-3 response from the Titans pushed them up 20-17. Edgewood University would stay hot on their heels, but three straight points closed out the set for UW-Oshkosh.
 
- After a 5-2 rally had the Titans up early in the second set, the Eagles kept pace until striking with a 6-1 sprint finished off by a pair of Kate Gunderson aces. An 8-4 stretch from UW-Oshkosh pulled them ahead 20-19 and the Titans would lead 24-22 late. Offense and defense worked in tandem as a 3-1 stretch from Edgewood University evened things 25-25. The Titans put together back-to-back kills in extra points to claim a 2-0 lead.
 
- A 6-2 burst from UW-Oshkosh kept momentum rolling as they jumped ahead 11-6. Four unanswered from the Eagles, fueled by a pair of Bella Braun aces, pulled them back within 15-14, but four kills from the high-flying Titans offense propelled the No. 3 team in the nation back ahead. The UW-Oshkosh offense continued to click, polishing off the set and match on a 5-2 rally featuring five kills from the Titans.
 
- UW-Oshkosh outhit Edgewood University .227-to-.132.
 
- Grace Juergens posted a 15-kill, 13-dig double-double. Teammate Samantha Perlberg shined with a 14-kill, 16-dig double-double of her own.
 
- Three Titans posted six blocks.
 
- Katie Borchert and Nida Zukauskaite earned identical 12-kill, 12-dig double-doubles.
 
- Gunderson recorded 12 assists and three aces. Abbey Eivins tallied 17 assists.
 
- Marina Hosticka performed well at the net with five blocks, while Mia Hinkamper continued to hold down the back line with 16 digs.
 
MATCH TWO: RV CARTHAGE 3, EDGEWOOD UNIVERSITY 1 (25-17, 25-14, 24-26, 25-20)
- The Firebirds rolled in set one, jumping out to a 13-2 lead and never looking back. They outhit the Eagles .227 to -.057 in the opening frame.
 
- Carthage continued to shine in the second set. A 6-1 sprint propelled them ahead 11-5. Edgewood University rattled off four points to close within two, but the Firebirds would close out the set outscoring the Eagles 14-5.
 
- Edgewood University found their footing in the third set. Four points in a row helped them to a 7-3 advantage early. Carthage would break through on a 4-1 rally for a 13-11 gap, but a 4-0 response from the Eagles had the two avian teams duking it out over slim leads down the stretch. Down 23-21 late, Edgewood University's offense took over on a 5-1 rally, including a pair of kills to finish off the frame.
 
- After Carthage led 9-5 early, a 7-3 reply from the Eagles evened the fourth set. The two squads wrestled over points as neither side found a clear advantage until late. The Firebirds struck first, putting together seven-straight points after being down 18-17 to close within match point.
 
- Carthage won the hitting battle .238-to-.087 and had a 56-to-39 advantage in kills.
 
- Madilyn Danielson had a 14-kill, 22-dig double-double. Kristina Manojlovic paced all hitters with 18 kills and hit .318 on 44 swings.
 
- Eivins recorded a 16-assist, 13-dig double-double. Borchert earned 12 digs and nine kills.
 
- Haley Chavez tallied eight assists and a pair of aces.
 
- Payton Millin and Anna Hennessey each tallied seven kills.
 
- Hinkamper finished the second match with 16 digs.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Hennesey's seven kills against the Firebirds were a personal best.
 
UP NEXT
The Eagles will return to NACC action Thursday. They will take on the Concordia Chicago Cougars in River Forest, Ill. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
