SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The Edgewood College Eagles hit the road to open their 2022 volleyball season with a pair of games against nationally ranked foes. The Eagles (1-1) took down no. 24 Transylvania (0-1) 3-1. They then fell to a 3-0 sweep from host no. 5 Trinity (1-0) in the afternoon match. The Eagles finished the day 1-1 against a pair of quality opponents.
EAGLES 3, #24 PIONEERS 1 (25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21)
- The Eagles fired off the blocks to take the first two sets over their ranked foe, finishing the first set on an 8-3 run and pulling away with a 10-3 run in the second set to take a 22-16 lead. Edgewood College led 15-11 in the third set, but Transylvania fired back with a 7-0 run to take over the set. The Eagles would find distance from their foes to close the fourth set, going on a 10-4 run to take an 18-12 lead on route to a 3-1 victory.

Ashley Bruehlman hit .282 on 39 attacks with 17 kills, four aces, and 10 digs, the kills and aces team highs in the match.

Abigail Hoffmann and
Taylor Salmon continued their shared duties as setter for the Eagles, combining for 52 assists as they ran the Edgewood College offense. The Eagles totaled 62 assists as a team, tied for fourth in the single match record books with a match against Wheaton on September 16, 2016.
- Hoffmann ended up with a triple-double against the Pioneers. She posted 11 kills, 25 assists, and 10 digs with a .393 hitting percentage.

Lea Bunch led the defensive effort with 21 digs as the Eagles outhit the Pioneers .313 to .228.
#5 TRINITY 3, EAGLES 0 (19-25, 18-25, 13-25)
- The Eagles fell behind early to Trinity in the first set and couldn't catch up, but hung around in the second set until a 7-2 Tigers run put the host in the driver's seat 19-14. The third set was similar to the second, with Trinity shutting down Edgewood College with a 12-1 run to take the set and match.
- The Tigers defense stifled the Eagles attack, with Trinity winning the hitting battle .140 to -.050. The Tigers had nine blocks for the match, six of which came from Emily Ellis.
- Salmon had 13 assists to finish her day with 40 in total, while Hoffmann added 10 digs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The victory over Transylvania marked the Eagles second-straight season opening victory and second-straight victory over a ranked squad. Edgewood College defeated Dubuque on the road at the start of the 2021 season on September 1, 2021, and later defeated then-no. 25 Concordia-Wisconsin on September 15, 2021 at home.
