RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Junior
Jake Negus became the 19th Edgewood College Men's Basketball player to reach 1,000 career points as the Eagles picked up a NACC road win over Concordia University Chicago Wednesday evening. The Eagles trailed by six at halftime before staging the second-half comeback and holding on for a 63-62 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On a night where Negus joined a club based on his offensive accomplishments, it was the Eagles defense who guided the team to a league win. Concordia Chicago entered the game averaging 80.5 points per game and the Eagles held them well below that average. The Eagles held CUC to 32.8 percent shooting in the game, 30.3 percent in the second half.
- Negus joined the 1,000-point club with his first basket of the game, coming with 12:07 left in the opening half. He drove left and finished strong to reach the milestone.
- Trailing 42-37 with 14 minutes left in the second half, Edgewood College (6-12, 5-8 NACC) made its first big run of the night. The Eagles posted an 18-4 scoring run over the next eight minutes to take their largest lead of the night, 55-46.
Matthew Myers started the run with a 3-point make, while Negus added a three of his own during the stretch.
- Concordia Chicago (6-12, 5-8 NACC) would work its way back into the game, however, over the final couple of minutes. The Eagles led 63-54 with 2:25 to go, but the Cougars scored the game's final eight points to get within one. After a layup with 21 seconds left, the Cougars forced an Edgewood College turnover and had a look to win, but a 3-point attempt came up well short on the final possession.
- Three Eagles finished in double figures on Wednesday, led by
Ben Seefeld's 17 points.
Ryan Buss and
Avery Lyons each added 16 points. The Eagles used a 40-26 advantage in the paint to gain the one-point victory.
- Buss added eight rebounds, while Seefeld pulled down seven and
Jacob Miller recorded six.
- The Eagles blocked a season-high six shots on Wednesday night with
Caleb Holzman leading the way with three rejections. Buss, Negus, and Myers all turned a Cougars shot away as well.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The win gives the Eagles the season sweep over Concordia Chicago for the third-straight season. Edgewood College has won six-straight in the series.
- The Eagles moved within a game of the sixth spot in the NACC standings with the win. Lakeland University (6-7) currently occupies the sixth seed with seven league games remaining. The top six teams qualify for the NACC Tournament.
- Negus is the 19th player in Eagles history to reach 1,000 career points. Pat Wolff (1988-1992) is the Eagles all-time leading scorer with 1,980 points.
THE OPPOSITION
- Raushaun Amos scored 16 points to pace the Cougars, while Xeo Golding scored 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Izak Ruddell grabbed a game-best nine rebounds.
