Benedictine outlasts Edgewood College in Battle of Eagles

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team welcomed a team receiving national recognition in the latest D3Hoops.com poll Saturday in Benedictine University. Edgewood College battled Benedictine, but couldn't quite pull off the upset, falling 90-84.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (4-11, 3-7 NACC) had five players score in double figures on Saturday led by Ryan Buss who poured in 16 points. Ben Seefeld added 15, Jake Negus chipped in 14, while Avery Lyons and Max Fernholz added 13 and 12, respectively. All of the Fernholz points came in the final two minutes, all via the 3-point shot.

- Benedictine (12-3, 8-2 NACC) led 41-29 thanks to 51.7 percent (15-for-29) shooting. Edgewood College made just 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) in the opening half but did make all 11 of its free throw attempts. For the game, Edgewood College made 23-of-24 at the line. Seefeld, Buss, and Lyons all went perfect from the charity stripe, all three players attempting at least five free throws.

- Benedictine used its advantage in the paint to down Edgewood College. Benedictine scored 42 points in the paint compared to 24 for Edgewood College. Many of those points came from Eric Grygo, who scored 22 points and added 13 rebounds. Benedictine also had a decisive advantage on the boards, 35-20.

- The Edgewood College offense got rolling in the second half, scoring 49 points after the break. Edgewood College made nine 3-pointers in the second half, including the four from Fernholz. For the game they shot 11-of-21 from deep, while Benedictine countered with 8-of-21 3-point shooting.

- Matthew Myers led Edgewood College with five assists, while Lyons and Jacob Miller each dished out three dimes.

THE OPPOSITION
- In addition to Grygo's double-double, Collin Mergl scored a game-high 23 points for Benedictine. Kyle Graebner added 19 points.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College will conclude its current five-game home stretch with a Tuesday night NACC matchup against Dominican University. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
