MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team entered Wednesday's in desperate need of a NACC win. The Eagles got just that in holding on for a 71-69 victory of Lakeland University behind a 22-point effort from
Ben Seefeld.
Ryan Buss added a double-double in the league victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (4-10, 3-6 NACC) entered the game with a 2-6 league record, but trailed Lakeland by just two games with the Muskies (6-8, 4-5 NACC) sitting in sixth place in the league standings. While there is plenty of basketball left, moving to within one game of the sixth place spot was crucial on Wednesday night.
- The Eagles jumped out to a 38-27 halftime lead, playing one of their best halves of the season over the first 20 minutes. Seefeld led a balanced first half attack with 11 points, while Buss added seven points and five rebounds.
Jacob Miller,
Avery Lyons, and
Jake Negus all chipped in six points for the Eagles before the break.
- Edgewood College built the lead by shooting 41.5 percent (17-for-41) from the floor. The Eagles shot eight more times than the Muskies in the first half thanks to a 27-18 advantage on the boards and a 7-2 turnover edge.
- The Eagles would start the second half strong as well, pushing their lead to a game-high 17 points with 16:21 left in the game. They led 66-52 with 4:55 left before the Muskies made a last push to make things interesting.
- The Muskies got the score to 70-67 with 25 seconds left before being forced to foul. Miller connected on 1-of-2 from the line with 19 seconds to go, making the score 71-67. Lakeland would get to the line on its ensuing trip with Zach Hasenstein making both free throws, making the score 71-69. The Eagles would miss the front end of a one-and-one, giving Lakeland a last chance, but the Muskies heave fell short, allowing for the Eagles to escape with the two-point victory.
- Seefeld finished with 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting to go along with seven rebounds. Buss recorded his first career double-double in scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 boards, while Negus added 11 points of his own and Lyons chipped in 10.
- The Eagles locked down Lakeland, holding the Muskies to 37.3 percent shooting (25-for-67) for the game.
THE OPPOSITION
- Hasentein was one of four Muskies to finish in double figures, scoring a team-high 16 points. Trenton Nickel added 15 for Lakeland.
