MADISON, Wis. – Ben Seefeld recorded his second career double-double, but it was not enough as the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team dropped its 2019-20 season and home opener Tuesday night. The Eagles battled the University of Dubuque, falling 67-61 in the non-conference affair inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles (0-1) came into the night with the goal of slowing down the high-powered Dubuque attack and they succeeded greatly. The Spartans (3-0) came in averaging 112 points per contest over their first two games and were held to just 67 on Tuesday night.
- Edgewood College shot 43.5 percent (10-for-23) from the floor in the first half and took a 27-24 lead into the break. The Eagles trailed 20-18 with 3:31 left in the half before a 9-0 run pushed them in front, 27-20.
Matthew Myers had two fast-break layups during the run, while Seefeld recorded an old fashioned 3-point play to cap off the 9-0 stretch.
- Seefeld led all scorers in the game with 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting. He added a team-best 10 rebounds. The Eagles were outrebounded, 39-36, in the contest.
- With the scored tied at 35 early in the second half, the Spartans used a 12-4 run to build an eight-point lead, their largest until they ended up going up nine with 1:18 left in the contest. The Dubuque lead hovered around the four to eight point mark for most of the second half.
- Myers and
Jake Negus each chipped in 10 points for the Eagles, while
Ryan Buss added eight and pulled down seven rebounds.
Jacob Miller led the team with three assists.
- The Eagles struggled to shoot from 3-point range, connecting on just 1-of-13 from deep. The Spartans connected on 7-of-24 from long range.
- Edgewood College finished the contest with a 38-26 edge in points in the paint and shot 44.9 percent from the floor (22-for-49) despite its struggles from deep.
