LISLE, Ill. – The Edgewood College and Benedictine University Women's Volleyball teams put on a show Saturday. In a battle of Eagles, the two programs went to a fifth set, but unfortunately Edgewood College came up just short in the NACC battle, falling 3-2.
Mackenzie Doherty recorded a career-best 23 kills for Edgewood College in the setback. The win for Benedictine secured the final spot in the NACC Tournament, meaning Edgewood College will fall just short of a league tournament berth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The final set was an exciting one that ended up in favor of Benedictine, 19-17. Edgewood College trailed 12-6 in that final set before rattling off five-straight points to make the score 12-11. Benedictine would score the next two and had three-straight chances at a match point but Edgewood College again went on a run with four-straight points to go ahead 15-14. After trading several points, Benedictine finally put away the match at 19-17.
- Doherty and
Abbey Maier were outstanding for Edgewood College on Saturday. Doherty posted a career-best 23 kills and Maier tied a career-best with 19, while hitting a ridiculous .643 for the match. She made just one error on 28 attacks.
- Edgewood College (9-20, 6-5 NACC) opened up with a 25-22 win in set one before Benedictine evened things up (25-18) in set two. Edgewood College won the third set 27-25 but Benedictine again answered with a 25-19 win in the fourth set.

Brittany Sager tallied 28 assists for Edgewood College with
Ella Carpenter adding 16 and
Taylor Salmon chipping in with 10.

Sarah Uczen and Doherty led the defensive effort with 13 and 12 digs, respectively, giving Doherty a double-double for the match. Carpenter added five blocks with
Bridget Daniels tallying four.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- With the loss and other results not going the way Edgewood College wanted over the weekend, they will fall just short of the NACC Tournament. Benedictine moved to 7-4 in league play with the win, and Edgewood College dropped to 6-5. There is one NACC Tournament match left in the regular season but Benedictine also clinched the tiebreaker with the head-to-head victory.
