PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team recorded its highest point total since the 1994-95 season in defeating Lakeland University 106-95 in overtime Wednesday night at Woltzen Gymnasium. The Eagles shot the ball extremely well, including 20-of-22 from the free throw line, and had five players finish in double figures in the overtime win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (4-10, 4-5 NACC) thought it was going to walk away with a win in regulation until the Muskies Pat McDonald hit a 3-point shot with 16 seconds left, forcing the 88-88 tie. In overtime, the Eagles outscored the Muskies, 17-8, and made all seven of their free throws in pulling away for the 11-point win.
- The Eagles led by seven at the half and extend that lead to 10 when
Jake Negus opened the second half with a 3-point make. From there, Lakeland would fight back, tying the game at 62-62. The Muskies would go up 78-70 before the Eagles turned momentum back in their favor in what ended up as a wild second half.
- Edgewood College never trailed in overtime, which began with four straight points from
Emil Radisevic, who finished the game with 15 points and a team-best eight rebounds. With the Eagles leading by two with just over a minute left,
Sy Staver buried his fourth 3-pointer of the game, making the score 100-95. From there, Edgewood College hit 6-of-6 at the line for the 11-point win.
- Negus led all players with 24 points, one of five Eagles to finish in double figures. Joining him was
Ben Seefeld with 17, Radisevic and
McClain Steffens with 15, and Staver with 12. Radisevic added six assists, while Staver and Negus each dished out five with the Eagles finishing the night with 23 helpers.
- The Eagles were extremely efficient, which can be assumed when you go over the century mark. Edgewood College shot 55.1 percent (38-for-69) from the floor, 38.5 percent (10-for-26) from 3-point range, and 90.9 percent (20-for-22) from the free throw line.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College went over the century mark for the 25th time in program history, but just the second time since the turn of the century. The last time the Eagles scored over 100 was in a 101-93 win over the University of Chicago on November 8, 2008. Only three of the Eagles 100-point games were overtime contests, including a 104-96 win over the Muskies during the 1992-93 season.
THE OPPOSITION
- Lakeland University had four players of its own score in double figures, led by Eric Nygaard's 23. Zach Hasentein (18), McDonald (17), and Shakur Jinad (13) all posted double-digit scoring efforts as well.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles will continue their NACC road tour Saturday at Benedictine, the second part of a women's/men's doubleheader. The men's tip is set for 4:15 p.m.
