Eagles shutout Kohawks in home opener

MADISON, Wis. – Excitement was in the air at Breese Stevens Field on a rainy Wednesday night, as the Edgewood College men's soccer team earned their second win of the season with a shutout against Coe College. Home opening excitement proved to be just the spark the Eagle offense needed, coming off a recent loss. The Eagles dominated the game from the beginning and rolled to a 3-0 victory over the Kohawks.

Edgewood College (2-1) scored first in the 17th minute, as a beautiful diving header from senior Garrett Lee whizzed into the net for his second goal of the season. Lee's header came off a run from Tyler Nelson down the left side of the field. Nelson narrowly beat out the Coe College (0-2) defender in time to cross the ball to Lee.

Only 13 minutes later, freshman Zander Hartberg would add to the Eagles lead with a goal of his own. The Stoughton, Wis. native intercepted a pass from a Coe College player and blasted the ball into the net from 25 yards out. Hartberg's goal sparked the Eagles, as the defense did not allow the Kohawks to record any shots for the remainder of the first half.

The Eagles offense wasted no time dominating in the second half, as Lee netted his second goal of the match. In the 47th minute Sean Surtees took advantage of a free kick, connecting with Victor Lombardino who found Lee from across the field and perfectly crossed the ball through traffic to a sliding Lee. The senior's second goal of the night put Lee in a tie for second on the Edgewood College men's soccer all-time list with 35 career goals. Lee is just two goals away from record holder Jeff Orens' 37 goals.

The Eagles would hold the Kohawks to just two shots in the second half, as both offense and defense exhibited strong communication in the contest. Edgewood College outshot Coe College 15-6 overall. Eagle goalkeeper Carson Hughes made three saves to earn his first career shutout.

Edgewood College will be back in action at Breese Stevens Field on Saturday for a 6:00 pm non-conference match with Judson University.
