WHEATON, Ill. – The Edgewood College volleyball team always challenges themselves with stiff non-conference competition, and Tuesday night was no exception. The Eagles fell 3-0 to two of the region's best, UW-Oshkosh and Wheaton College, in a triangular at King Arena.
Edgewood College (1-5) dropped straight sets to UW-Oshkosh in the opener 25-15, 25-22, 25-19. The Eagles best chance to steal a set came in the second. The Eagles had trailed 11-9, but came back to grab a 12-11 lead on a kill from Makenzie Doherty and an assisted block by Megan Schwartz and Lizzie Lightner. Edgewood College still held the lead at 14-13 until a 3-0 run for UW-Oshkosh (4-2) gave the Titans the lead which they never relinquished.
Doherty led the Eagles with seven kills, while Schwartz chipped in six kills. Lightner had a team-high three blocks, while Alex Zapuchlak dished out 12 assists. Sarah Uczen led the Eagles back row play with 18 digs.
In the second match, the Eagles couldn't contain Wheaton College's Madeline Moore, as the Thunder remained unbeaten on the season at 5-0. Doherty again led the squad with nine kills, while Sarah Pfeifer added seven kills. Zapuchlak and Sager nearly split the assists equally with 12 and 11, respectively, while Uczen had a team-best 10 digs.
Edgewood College will have a rare eight-day break from competition before opening their NACC season on September 12. The Eagles will begin their quest for a NACC title with a match at Alverno College.
