Wiskow controls the net as Eagles sweep Alverno in NACC opener

MADISON, Wis. – A rare seven day break early in the season, appears to have served the Edgewood College volleyball team well. The Eagles controlled their NACC opening match with Alverno from start to finish in a 25-21, 25-15, 25-16 sweep of the Inferno. The win marked the fourth straight season, that the Eagles have won their conference opener.

Alverno College (1-9, 0-1 NACC) may have actually been getting the better of the Eagles in the early going, taking a 10-6 lead in the first set. However, the Eagles tied the set at 14-14 following an assisted block by Megan Schwartz and Tori Wiskow and then a kill by Schwartz. Edgewood College (2-5, 1-0 NACC) and the Inferno will still deadlocked at 21-21, when the Eagles scored the final four points of the set on serves from Nichole Schaeve. Grace Zimmer had four kills and four digs in the first set.

The first set was as close as Alverno would get, as the Eagles rolled out to a 10-3 lead in the second set and never looked back. Mackenzie Doherty, Seghan Northey and Sarah Pfeifer each had three kills in the second set as the Eagles hit a match-best .276 attack percentage. In the third set, back-to-back blocks involving Wiskow sparked the Eagles to a 9-3 start. Alverno would close within 14-10 but would get no closer. Wiskow had two kills and five blocks in the third set, including one solo effort.

Wiskow had a fantastic night, scoring five kills with no errors, hitting .500 for the match and recording a career-high nine blocks, including three solo blocks. In all, Edgewood College 12 total blocks as a team. Zimmer and Doherty also had five kills apiece to share team-high honors. Sarah Uczen was the only Eagle in double figures in blocks with 16. Alex Zapuchlak and Brittany Sager each handed out a team-high 11 assists.

Edgewood College will head north on the weekend to participate in the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament in Eau Claire. The Eagles have matches with Concordia College-Moorhead and Augsburg University on Friday, then Gustavus Adolphus College and host UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.
